How to Make Your First Quilt and Actually Love It: The Brave Beginner Quilt Course
So you want to make a quilt. Maybe you've been thinking about it for a while, or maybe someone in your life quilts, and you've always been a little curious. OR - maybe you have a new baby or grandbaby coming? Maybe you are getting married or have another milestone in life that deserves a quilt. Regardless of your way, you're in the right place — and we're going to make sure your first quilt is something you're genuinely proud of. No hiding it in a closet or making it a dog bed.
This is the Brave Beginner Quilt Course: Make Your First Quilt and Love It, a free video series from Jittery Wings Quilt Company. I'm Mitzie Schafer, and I've been designing quilt patterns and teaching color to quilters for years. This course is built for someone who is brand new — no experience required, no special equipment, no overwhelm.
Why Most First Quilts End Up in a Closet
Here's something that happens a lot with beginner quilters: they work hard, they learn the skill, and then they finish their first quilt and don't love it. It gets tucked away somewhere, and instead of feeling excited about this new thing they can do, there's a little bit of shame attached to it.
The reason is almost always the same. Most beginner quilts focus entirely on technique — and they should, because technique matters. But color gets ignored, and the result is a quilt that feels random and underwhelming. Scraps thrown together, squares that don't quite work, colors that fight each other instead of singing together.
We're not doing that here.
What Makes This Course Different
In the Brave Beginner Quilt Course, you'll learn technique and color at the same time. Because what makes you proud of a finished quilt isn't just that the seams are straight — it's that the whole thing feels alive. That it has movement and contrast, and that quality that makes people stop and say, "You made that?"
We call that spellbinding around here. And that's exactly what we're going for with your very first quilt.
We're using the free Sidewalk Cracks mini pattern from Jittery Wings. It's simple enough for a complete beginner, but when you get the color right — strong contrast, light and dark fabrics working together across the quilt top — it looks anything but basic.
You're Learning Alongside a Real Beginner
In every video, I'm joined by Kelly, my studio assistant at Jittery Wings. Kelly has never made a quilt. Not once. She's going to be learning right alongside you, asking every question you might be nervous to ask, and making this quilt from scratch just like you are. If you've ever wished you had someone in the room going through it with you — that's Kelly.
What We'll Cover in This Series
New videos are planned weekly until the series is complete, and we'll walk through every step together:
Getting to know your sewing machine — because frustration with the machine is one of the biggest reasons beginners give up, and we're going to make sure that doesn't happen to you.
The tools you actually need, kept simple and practical — no long shopping lists here.
Cutting fabric safely and efficiently with a rotary cutter.
Piecing your blocks together.
Pressing - not ironing.
Layout, which is where your color choices really come to life.
Basting, quilting, and binding.
And finally, labeling your finished quilt so you — and anyone who finds it someday — always knows who made it.
