Cosmic Sass, the Calm But Not Quiet Version
This version of Cosmic Sass was made using Bundle No. 29, a palette I often describe as calm but not quiet. It’s rich without being loud, grounded without feeling subdued—and it’s a beautiful example of how color balance can create energy without chaos.
In this post, I’m walking you through how this quilt came together, why these color choices work so well with the Cosmic Sass design, and how you can recreate (or reinterpret) this look using the pattern, bundle, and Companion Course.
About the Cosmic Sass Quilt Pattern
Cosmic Sass is all about bold shapes, strong contrast, and letting color take the lead. The pattern creates visual punch through scale and placement rather than complicated piecing, which makes it incredibly satisfying to sew.
This is a pattern that rewards intentional color choices. When the palette is thoughtfully arranged, the quilt feels dynamic and confident—exactly what Cosmic Sass is meant to be.
Design Features to Notice
What stands out most in this version is how the design feels both structured and expressive. The repeated shapes establish rhythm, while the color placement keeps your eye moving across the quilt using the stars.
Cosmic Sass works especially well when you allow colors to converse with one another rather than compete. In this quilt, the balance between cool and warm tones gives the design depth and clarity without overwhelming the viewer.
About the Fabrics Used (Bundle No. 29)
Bundle No. 29 includes a rich mix of blues and teals, layered with reds, purples, and soft whites and creams. It’s a palette that feels steady and confident—calm, but never boring.
The lighter neutrals create breathing room between stronger hues, while the deeper colors anchor the design. This balance makes Bundle No. 29 especially well-suited for Cosmic Sass, where contrast and clarity are key to the pattern’s impact.
The Backing Fabric Choice
For the backing, I chose Tarrytown Peach Fizz RS3020 11 from Ruby Star, and it brings just the right amount of warmth to the quilt.
This peachy tone softens the cooler blues and teals on the front while still complementing the reds and purples. It’s a backing choice that feels intentional and cohesive, and it adds a subtle surprise when the quilt is turned over.
Binding Details (Yes, the Same Stripy Favorite)
Just like the previous quilt, I used my favorite black-and-white striped binding—and for good reason.
With a palette this rich, the stripe provides a crisp frame without introducing another color decision. It keeps the finish clean and graphic, letting the quilt top remain the star.
How I Quilted This Version
This Cosmic Sass quilt is finished with straight-line quilting, spaced ½" apart, using the same thread as the previous quilt.
Straight-line quilting reinforces the bold geometry of the pattern while adding texture and durability. The consistent spacing supports the design rather than distracting from it, making it a great choice if you want a modern finish that feels timeless.
Learn More with the Cosmic Sass Companion Course
If you want extra guidance while making this quilt, there is a Cosmic Sass Companion Course designed to walk alongside the pattern.
The course dives deeper into fabric selection, color placement, and design decision-making—especially helpful if you want to build confidence working with bold shapes and curated palettes. It’s a supportive way to slow down, understand the “why,” and trust your instincts as a maker.
