Welcome Quilty Friend!

Step out of Traditional and Predictable and into Spellbinding…

Use our “controlled improv quilt” method to make a one-of-a-kind quilt full of color, movement, and magic.

What is Controlled Improv Quilting

Controlled improv quilting is about structure and freedom. It uses intentional limits—like a consistent block, fixed number of fabrics, and a clear design flow—to guide your creative choices. Instead of assigning every color to a specific spot, this method teaches you to trust your eye, explore layout options, and respond to the quilt as it develops. It's playful and personal, but still grounded in solid design principles. The end result? A quilt that’s cohesive, expressive, and completely your own.

STEP 1

Start with a Pattern that Teaches, Not Tells
Our patterns aren’t rigid blueprints—they’re creative frameworks. Instead of telling you where every color goes, we guide you through a process for making your own choices with confidence and clarity.

STEP 2

Choose a Color Flow Bundle
Our curated bundles are designed to move. Whether you're drawn to bold contrast or soft gradients, each bundle supports strong visual flow and makes your layout decisions easier.

STEP 3

Quilt Freely, with Structure
With video tutorials, layout strategies, and real-time encouragement, you’ll build a quilt that’s beautifully yours—structured enough to succeed, flexible enough to play.

Let’s Retreat Together!

Join Mitzie for the second Jittery Wings Color Flow Quilt Design Retreat in September 2025.

During this four-day retreat, you will have total access to Mitzie and her studio as you learn about color from her firsthand. The Retreat Includes:

  • A complete lesson on the color flow process she uses to select colors for her quilts.

  • Open access to her fabrics (solids and blenders) to curate your own personalized bundle of 24 fat quarters with her support. Her studio features large white open tables for you to spread out and curate your colors.

  • A complete lesson in Design Theory using her Color Flow Process.

  • Her support to help you design your own quilt top (average sizes will be wall hanging or crib). You will have your own design wall and she will guide you, answer your questions, and help you design a quilt from start to finish. She will provide basic math cheats for blocks to ensure you aren’t spending time at the retreat on steps that prevent you from finishing your layout.

  • Wednesday, September 10, 2025- Saturday, September 13, 2025

About the Patterns

Detailed Instructions

Some folks are readers. So I work to write clear instructions in every pattern. Whether you are a beginner or lifer, the instructions serve as a guide to the finish.

Clear Technical Illustrations

Some folks are skimmers, or let's be real, just look at the pictures. All my patterns include clear technical illustrations to guide you through piecing the quilt so you only need to look at the measurements if that is how you work best.
