Adding a Hanger to Your Mini Quilt

Mini quilts are begging to be hung up for you and the world to enjoy. Often we get so focused on finishing the quilt that how we plan to hang it is an after thought and we get frustrated trying to use push pins, safety pins, velcro, and anything else we have around the house.

PLAN FOR YOUR HANGER

Before you begin your binding, take 5 minutes to make these simple little triangles to tuck into the corners of your quilt. They allow you to slide a wooden rod between them to hang your quilt.

I find that this process works best for mini quilts that measure smaller than 30” across the top.

STEP 1: Cut two squares from that measure 3.5” x 3.5”.

STEP 2: Press each square into a triangle, making a crisp line diagonally. Line the edges up so they are clean.

STEP 3: On the back of the quilt, line up the corners of each triangle and the two raw edges with the top right and left corners of the mini quilt.

STEP 4: Clip the triangles in place.

STEP 5: Clip your binding over the top of the triangles.

STEP 6: Sew on your binding as you normally do, making sure to catch the raw edges of the triangle hangers in the seams.

This is similar to how I sew on my labels.

STEP 7: Press all the seams of the binding flat.

Pro-Tip: Finishing your binding can be tricky. Here is another little video on how I remember to finish by binding by “sewing the man’s belt and not his crotch.”

STEP 8: Press all the seams of the binding back, making sure to keep the triangle hangers flat against the back of the quilt.

STEP 9: Finish your binding and add a wooden rod that stretches from the top point of one hanger to the other. Slide the rod under both triangles and use the rod to hand the mini quilt.

I hope this has been a helpful little quick tutorial for you! I just love adding these to all my mini quilts.

Thanks for being here! I would love to see your mini quilt hangers. Want to make this cute little Crooked Christmas Tree yourself?
