Make a Rope Christmas Tree Skirt and Matching Ornaments

Materials Needed:

  • One 1000 ft spool of 3/16th inch rope from The Mountain Thread Company (Not an affiliate link. I just love their products)

  • 1/4” scraps in your chosen colors

  • Thread in your chosen colors

Basic How-To Steps for the Skirt:

  1. I have a fake tree, so I started with a circle because I can put the skirt over the tree stand before I put the fake tree on it. I made the opening about 6” in diameter.

  2. Keeping the new row of rope next to the previous one, I set my stitches to ZigZag. I made the stitch wide enough on my machine to go from the center on one piece of rope to the center of the next. I like my zigs and zags to be a bit stretched out also so that it doesn’t take so long to sew it, but close enough that it holds it together.

  3. When I felt like it, I used the 1/4” strips and wrapped them around the rope like a candy cane to add color.

  4. I switched up the color of thread I used to add some depth to it.

  5. The full skirt measures 4’ in diameter.

  6. I back stitched at the end and covered the end with a piece of ribbon that I hand stitched on.

Basic How-To Steps for the Ornaments:

  1. First, I cut the remaining rope into 3 yard pieces. If you want your ornaments to be different sizes, that is fine to.

  2. Use the Moutain Thread Company’s tutorial on making rope bowls, but keep the “bowl” flat. https://www.themountainthreadcompany.com/videos

  3. Add some 1/4” strips for color like above.

  4. Before you get to the end, about a fingers width away, add a little hanging rope.

  5. Backstitch at the end of the ornament.
