Okay, Quilter Bees! This is the block that makes quilters fear this quilt, so I am so proud of you for being here!

For my experienced QST friends, here is a little note on cutting (Also posted in the Cutting Fabrics Post for the Quilt Along). This will help you save a little fabric when trimming.

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT CUTTING YOUR QST PIECES:

• I have a lot of beginner quilters here. For that reason, I left a good cushion for trimming your QST blocks. You have to trim them anyway, and why not just make sure you have enough?

• If you feel confident making QSTs, you can cut your 6” pieces down to 5.5” square with basically very very little to trim, or 5.75” for a bit more cushion.

Tips & Tricks:

• Let’s talk a little about pressing. When you are making the HSTs for your QSTs, press your HSTs to the same color. This way you can “nest” your two HSTs together to make your QST. This is explained in the video.

  • Regarding pressing the final seam that makes your QSTs, the video discusses pressing to one side and turning the center seam.

  • This is how I did my first sample. On my second sample, I pressed that QST seam open.

  • Because this is improv, it is impossible to “plan” when direction the final corner seams will face and you will have some “bulky” seams when sewing the quilt top together. By pressing this last seam open, you will minimize this some.

• Trimming is REALLY important. It is the difference between a wonky quilt and a square quilt. I recommend putting in a good movie and spending time doing this well.
